Mexico City: Landscapes of Infrastructure

CURATORIAL TEXT (PROYECTOR):

Infrastructure can be defined in general, as the basic foundation of a system designed to support human activity. Its ubiquity is present in the land we build on, the factories that process it, the spaces created from it, the buildings that are erected upon it, the minds that design them and the communities that inhabit them. As is evident from this list, there is a wide variety of infrastructure that affects and shapes our daily lives. This compilation of short video-statements aims to visualize these systems that operate at a large scale on both physical and abstract structures that interfere in our cities, altering environments and conditioning activities while proposing a broad and diverse concept of infrastructure.

The following ten young practices present their multi-scale vision of the apparatuses -both physical and ideological- that constitute the scaffolding on which the Mexican landscape and cities are sustained. Observing from their individual practices unprecedented aspects of the transformation of the territory and the production of the national space, they deliberately expose the hidden, in order to understand the importance of those landscapes of infrastructure, which determine more visible aspects such as physical degradation, programmed growth, social and economic development, bringing to the forefront the inevitable correlation between the systems of thought that sustain the aspirations of development, the function of ideology and infrastructure as precursors of progress, and the anticipation of a promise of the future, which distracts us from its present effects.
